JACK LOCK - TIMELINE

This timeline has been inspired by the first page of Jack's war diary in which he records the main locations of his military deployment from 1915 to 1917. What follows are all known details of his active military service during the First World War.

1915

  • July 29th 1915

    Liverpool

    Embarked at Liverpool for Mudros on SS Aquitania

  • 5th August 1915

    Lemnos

    Arrived at Mudros on Lemnos.

  • 9th August 1915

    SS Osmanieh

    Left Lemnos on SS Osmanieh, Khedivial Mail Co. Begining of diary entries.

  • 10th August 1915

    Gulf of Saros

    Landed at Suvla Bay. Start of action fighting in the trenches at Gallipoli.

  • 25th August 1915

    Wounded

    Wounded in shoulder by shrapnel while acting as strecher bearer.

  • 26th August 1915

    SS Nevasa

    Woke beside dead man. Moved by steamer to the hospital ship SS Nevasa.

  • 27th August 1915

    Lemnos

    The SS Nevasa arrives back at Mudros bay.

  • 28th August 1915

    Mudros

    Disembarked the SS Nevasa and sorted into hospital camps.

  • 30th August 1915

    Convalescence

    Sent for a period of convalescence.

  • 11th September 1915

    Convalescence Ends

    Discharged from convalescence.

  • 12th September 1915

    Mudros West 

    Moved to Mudros West.

  • 13th September 1915

    SS Waterwitch

    Embarked on the SS Waterwitch.

  • 9th October 1915

    Hill 10

    Returned to duty with soldiers who were at Anzac Cove. Sent to dig trenches on Hill 10. Saw several dead bodies. Last diary entry.

  • 3rd-8th December 1915

    Evacuated

    The division was evacuated from Gallipoli, only 240 officers and 4480 men strong.

  • 13th December 1915

    Alexandria

    The division went on to Alexandria, where it arrived on 18th December. The units then concentrated at Sidi Bishr.

1916

  • 11th-15th February 1916

    Cairo

    The divisional artillery re-joined at Mena Camp, Cairo.

  • 2nd April 1916. 

    Suez Canal 

    The division occupied No 1 (Southern) Section of the Suez Canal defences.

  • Unknown dates 1916

    Palestine

    Marched across the Sinai desert to Palestine. At this time Jack received Field Punishment No 1 for theft of bread while starving – tied to wheel of cannon in hot sun.

1917

  • 26th-27th March 1917

    Gaza

    The First Battle of Gaza .

  • 17th-19th April 1917

    Gaza

    The Second Battle of Gaza. This is the time of his second wounding - 2971 casualties in his division.

  • 27th October -7th November 1917

    Gaza

    The Third Battle of Gaza, including the Capture of Gaza.

  • 21st-22nd December 1917

    Jaffa

    The Battle of Jaffa.

1918

  • 9th-10th April 1918

    Berukin

    The operations at Berukin.

  • 19th-23rd September 1918

    Sharon

    The battle of Sharon, part of the Battles of Megiddo.

  • 24th September 1918

    Hable

    The Division concentrated at Hable and began an advance to Haifa three days later.

  • 4th October 1918

    Haifa

    Move to Haifa completed.

  • 20th October 1918

    Ordered to Beirut

    The division was ordered to Beirut. This move began three days later and the brigades moved on successive days via Acre, Ras es Naqura, Tyre and Sidon.

  • 31st October - 5th November 1918

    Beirut

    The units concentrated at Beirut, but the Armistice between the Turkish and the Allies was signed on 31st October.

  • 28th November 1918.

    El Qantara

    The Division moved to El Qantara, back in Egypt.

  • January 1919

    Demobilised

    The first parties to be demobilised left for England.
